1. Marriage to the adoptee's parent (Common law does not count. Go ahead and get on down to the courthouse and get legally married ASAP)
2. Residing in the same home as the child for a period of at least a year, subject to a few rare exceptions
3. Consent of the biological marriage or proof of termination of parental rights or proof of implied consent by abandonment
4. In some cases, consent by the adoptee
